SØREN ENGSTED

I am interested in investigating the importance of the sculpture and objects, both in relation to Art History and as an everyday object. I am interested in questioning what art is and what art can be.

During the working process I am interested in the mistakes that occur, and the possibilities it creates (sensibility of failed seriousness).

To dethrone the seriousness that gives a more complex relation to the seriousness.
The materials I use are mainly cheap, found or ready-made objects. I like the democratic idea that you can go to the supermarket and buy materials for a work. I like to investigate different materials and find out which sculptural or conceptual possibilities they have.

I rarely see my objects as independent, but more as different characters that are part of a play where irony and humor are important.

I don’t work from a kind of master plan but my focus is more the investigation of smaller ideas and the possible connection between them.

My projects made of reality objects don’t claim reality, but rather question it.
Written, spoken or read language operate in one manner and visual art has got to do with tactility, materiality and presence. I am very aware of especially the first wave of conceptual art, but I can’t join this puritanistic approach to the material and physical world. Anyway an idea or a concept today is as attractive to the capital as  any material.

I’m interested in collapsing the borders between high and low art, minimal art and the grotesque, formal and informal.
